The visual elements in these masks are inspired by seigaiha or waves. This Japanese symbol/ motif was originally used in ancient Chinese maps to depict the sea. The pattern of concentric circles symbolizes the water waves which are a representation of surges of good luck. To others, these waves are a sign of power and resilience. The wave first appeared in traditional Japanese clothing and has continued to be used on clothing, ceramicware, and later in graphic designs.
